The study of visual arts is not unlike the study of movement. It demands a harmony of discipline with creative problem solving. The artist learns to coordinate mind and body to achieve beauty, passion, and communication of ones self.

Art & Motion

Communication is one of the most important skills we learn and develop. Expressing our feelings and our needs through Art is a positive way to communicate to the world we live in. Movement is another skill we learn, practice and refine. The mind was meant to play, explore, and discover and the body was meant to run, jump, climb, and dance.

This two hour class is designed to let the child explore visual arts through an impressive variety of mediums and imaginative materials, and embark on an early study of basic Aikido movement and concepts.

Throughout the course of this program, the emphasis will be on the process of creativity and the practice of purposeful movement.

ART

The first hour will introduce children to all forms of visual art. Lessons will integrate art history with hands on experience. Varied mediums and techniques will be explored with emphasis being placed more on process than product. We believe that the seed of the artist must be carefully planted in a fertile and nurturing environment at an early age. This artistic "seed" will grow with the child, and stand strong, bearing the fruit of the mature and confident artist. At the Art Center we follow the precept that a strong creative self manifests in many positive ways through out our lives, and connects us to other artists in a global community.

AIKIDO(aka Motion)

The second hour, the children move into the Dojo to learn and practice beginning Aikido. Aikido is a modern movement art designed to be non competitive and non destructive. Aikido is derived from the ancient Japanese art of Aiki Jujitsu, where the goal was not to destroy an adversary but rather to capture an opponent without injury. Aikido training is the study of conflict and how to transform its energy into a positive outcome. In Aikido, we show children the art of falling (ukemi). Children believe that when the fall they can get hurt. Ukemi teaches them fun and safe methods of falling using rolling, and tumbling games, they learn they can effectively replace fear and conflict with confidence and fun!
